Our focus at our Friday School this summer will be "Around the World Adventures" as we read books, cook new foods, make art, and learn about different cultures from around the world.
This week we discussed the book-A Long Walk To Water, a beautiful and heart wrenching true story of perseverance and strength. Our discussion led to how we can choose to use the lessons of our hardships to push us to greatness. We talked about what makes a good leader, and how to serve others. We also learned a bit about the cultures of people living in Sudan.
We cooked and ate Beetroot Salata (salad) and Goraasa be Dama (flatbread with an onion based stew)- two Sudanese dishes and played games that children in Uganda play-Kakopi Kakopi (chicken legs) and Bolinga (a game similar to ring around the rosy).
We made African animal silhouette paintings.
Using yellow and red tempera paint, we created the background on small sheets of watercolor paper. After the paint was dry we traced African animals in pencil and then painted them with black tempera paint.
It was a lovely day and we enjoyed having our friends join us in our learning fun.
